Community Power Play

$120 Raised To Date This Season for The Blue Jackets Foundation, thanks to Cam Atkinson's season opener #CommunityPowerPlay Goal!

THIS SEASON the Jacket Backers are again teaming up with the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation to present our 2nd ANNUAL COMMUNITY POWER PLAY!!   For each Power Play Goal scored by the Blue Jackets, the Jacket Backers will make a donation to the Blue Jackets Foundation – and we’d love it if you’d join us and match!  Use the donation button below to show your support and Celebrate Life and Hockey!

NEW FOR 2014 – 2015 SEASON!!  We’re increasing our donations!!  For the first PP Goal scored in each game, we will donate $20 to the Foundation, for the second PP Goal we will donate $40 more, for the third PP Goal we will donate $60 more and so on. If a PP goal turns out to be our game winner, we will add another $100 to the Foundation.  Help us celebrate the joy of scoring more power play goals!

#DefendNWA contest - Jacket Backers style

WITH SWORDS!!!! courtesy of @frickindannie If you're on Twitter or Facebook and follow the Columbus Blue Jackets (or received our last email), then you're probably familiar with their recent social media contest on how YOU would #DefendNWA. Well, we're putting our own twist on it. To win here's what you'll want to do:

Official Rules

1-Be creative, or at least show us a sense of humor.

2-Post on either the Facebook Jacket Backers page at facebook.com/jacketbackers or Twitter @JacketBackers with the #DefendNWA tag one of the following: picture/photo or drawing of how you would Defend NWA...or have defended NWA in the past whether at home or away.

3-We'll choose one at random AND we'll post another "top" 5 options for YOU to choose your favorite through a vote on Facebook. (1st prize is a hockey stick - top vote getter on Facebook; 2nd prize is a puck-chosen at random. Both stick & puck are courtesy of the CBJ. We'll also throw in a $50 credit on one of our upcoming 2013-2014 away trips for both the 1st & 2nd prize.)

4-All entries must be posted by Sunday, September 15th - the CBJ's first Pre-season home game vs Pittsburgh Penguins.

5-On Tuesday, September 17th we'll post the top 5 options for you to vote on via the Jacket Backers Facebook page. Vote by liking your favorite or by commenting on the post. Voting will end on Sunday, September 22nd.

Cross the Border to Ottawa - 11/17/13

Update:  Time is running out to join this trip.  We currently have 16 people going to Ottawa.  We have to make our final ticket commitment and payment on 10/14.  If you are interested in going on this trip, please purchase your ticket by Sunday 10/13 at 9:00pm.

The Jacket Backers are making their first group trip North of the Border.  We have a block of tickets reserved to root for the visiting team as the Blue Jackets visit the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, 11/17/13 at 1:00.

Our tickets are in Section 302, Rows E & F and the cost is only $55 per ticket.

Make sure your passport is valid and make your travel plans.  We can try to help arrange ride sharing.  Some people have expressed interest in renting a van for the trip and splitting the cost/drive.  We will do our best to help the group going share the travel.

In addition to the tickets, The Jacket Backers have reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn & Suites, Ottawa Downtown.  The room rate based on double occupancy is $119 Canadian dollars ($138.04 with taxes) - at current Canadian exchange rates 1 Canadian dollar =  .96 US dollars.  An additional $10 per person charge applies if more than double occupancy.  In-door and out-door parking ($17 Canadian per automobile, per night) with unlimited in and out privileges is subject to availability and passes will be issued on a first come first serve basis.  We will provide a discount code for you to use when calling to place your room reservation.  Reservations must be made by 10/27/13 to receive our group rate.  The Holiday Inn is located in Downtown Ottawa's trendy Golden Triangle district and is mere steps from the Rideau Canal, where you can stroll, bicycle (or if in winter, skate) past many of Ottawa's greatest historical and contemporary points of interest.  It is 25.7 km (about 16 miles and 30 - 40 minute drive) to Canadian Tire Centre.

We will leave early Saturday morning and arrive in Buffalo with plenty of time for a little pre-game preparation, cheer on the Jackets with 50+ hard core CBJ fans, enjoy a night on the town celebrating the Columbus Blue Jackets and return back to Columbus nicely rested from our stay at the Hyatt on Sunday.

This all inclusive trip package includes:

Sad news to share about former Membership Chair, David Yatsco

CHRIS PARKER/THISWEEKNEWSI have some very sad news to share with all of you today.  A close friend of David Yatsco informed me today that David passed away on Saturday, August 24.

David began serving as the Jacket Backers Membership Chair in 2008 for several seasons and gave the position all he had.  He was an unwavering fan through and through, even when our team had nowhere to go but up.  He was an enthusiastic supporter of the CBJ and volunteered his time at our membership table in arena sharing his love for the Jackets and hockey with everyone who stopped by.

He was well known for his "Welcome Letters" distributed in various means to new and existing club members and for his wry "Donations for a Power Play Goal" charity jar when things weren't looking their best on the ice.  It was with great reluctance that he stepped away from the position due to his ongoing health issues.  But that didn't stop him from trying to help and attending every event he could manage.  His passion for the Columbus Blue Jackets and for the Jacket Backers never wavered.

David was a quiet, unassuming man who always had a positive outlook on life.  He didn't like to draw attention to himself or his illness, but did quietly ask for prayers to help him have the strength to face this fight.  At first he didn't want many to know about his illness so that it wouldn't worry others until it became apparent he couldn't keep it a secret any longer.  At that point, he shared the news and began a quest to live with his disease bravely and remember to live every moment he possibly could to the fullest.  He was optimistic through it all.  He had a brief remission and had been returning to work, then his cancer returned and he began a new chemo treatment.  We hadn't heard from him much in the last two months as the chemo took its toll, but we didn't realize he was again so ill.
I last saw Dave at one of the Sunny 95 Neighborhood Block Parties during this summer where the CBJ had invited the Jacket Backers to share space in their booth and share our love for Jackets hockey.  The sun was out and David was smiling, looking forward to all that this season has to offer.  He'll be with us in spirit all the way to the day when the Columbus Blue Jackets hold the Stanley Cup high.
 
As David was so fond of signing off at the end of his Jacket Backers Welcome letters -
"Here's to playing hockey in June..."  in memory of David.

Funeral Saturday, August 31 at St. Michael's Parish, 300 N. Broad St, Canfield, OH at 9:30 am - after mass, moving across street for gathering

Group Seating Available at Washington Capitals - October 19, 2013

UPDATED 10/6/13 -SOLD OUT - Visit our Nation's Capital and cheer your Columbus Blue Jackets to victory!  The Jacket Backers have purchased a block of 30 tickets for the 10/19/13 game in Washington.

The tickets are in Section 432 & 433 and each ticket will be encoded with a $15 voucher for food, beer or wine at the Verizon Center.  Your cost per ticket and food voucher is $95.  Due to limited availability these tickets may be purchased by members only (members are permitted to bring family members and/or a guest).  If purchased directly from the Capitals these tickets would cost $88 plus $13.75 in fees per ticket and not include the food voucher.

In addition to the tickets, The Jacket Backers have reserved a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn in Silver Spring, Maryland.  The room rate based on double occupancy is $119 ($134.47 with taxes).  Valet parking ($15) is limited in the hotel garage, but free parking is available in the "Town Square Garage" directly behind the hotel lot.  We will provide a discount code for you to use when making your reservation online to receive this rate.  Reservations must be made by 10/3/13 to receive our group rate.  The Hampton Inn is located three blocks from the Red Line Metro stop with easy access to the Verizon Center and other Washington DC attractions.

We apologize to anyone that was hoping for this to be a bus trip.  That would have been our preference as well.  But due to the cost and immediate need to purchase tickets, we felt that trying to make a bus trip work to Washington would have prevented us from providing a variety of other travel opportunities that we will be announcing in the near future.

Jacket Backers Meeting Minutes Summary - July 25, 2013

Jacket Backer Meeting, July 25, 2013, 6:30 PM, Dan's Brick Lined Patio.

1. Krum Park playground was built earlier in the day.  Jacket Backer members, Julie Maurer, Chris Hapanowicz,  Bharati Jayanthi and Brian Schooley, were in attendance. Some met director of park, Tomica.  Some Krum Park volunteers also weeded a community garden near by. Jacket backers would like to contribute more. The event was on the Channel 4 news.  Also in attendance was former Blue Jacket player Jean-Luc Grand Pierre as well as Marcus Stephenson, CBJ Director of Digital Media, and John Davidson, President of Hockey Operations.   Karen Davis, CBJ director of communications, thanked Jacket Backers personally for being there. 

2. Transition:  Tom, JB Technical Chair, will move  previous officer emails to new emails.

3. Jason, JB Vice President, will be the liason to other NHL fan clubs. Jason's job is also responsible for preparing agenda for each meeting.

4. Secretary:  Meeting Next Wednesday July 31, 2013 7:15pm planned to finish updating the Bylaws to provide an official one for the club. 

5. Treasurer:  We have 512 members for season ending August 31 and ~264 members for 2013/2014.  

6. Activities:   Cannonfest  August 18th B-Dub Bethel 1:00-4:00 PM. Raffles, 50/50 raffle  There will be Videos. Block parties have gone well, given away prizes and talked to people about Jacket Backers.  August 6th, is in Powel. Keith and Chris volunteered to help.   R-bar Hockey Memorabilia Mart 2013 Sunday August 25th, 1-5pm (will open at 11AM) R-bar is remodeling and will have some of their memorbialia for sale. People can donate or sell on consignment with 25% to JB.  Or  rent a table for $25.  Pick up any items not sold by 5 pm or it becomes Jacket Backer property.  Jacket backers did sponsor a hole at the R-Bar Annual Golf Tournament  benefiting the ALS Foundation on July 26th.  Jacket backers are excited that there are many more opportunities for game watching parties dues to more games are in the eastern time zone this year.   

7. Communications/Social Media- Michelle Harklau:  If anyone needs anything written/published, let her know.   Deadline is Mondays for email for blast out Tuesdays or Wednesdays planned weekly during season and as needed in Summer

8. Community Service (Chris Hapanowicz): Jacket backers have Adopted a Highway near Hudson and North Broadway mile marker 112 & 114.   More discussion of the Krum Park gardens, money was approved to purchase mulch and/or plants to help with the community gardens.  Let Chris know if you are interested in working the Presidents Cup.   For more suggestions of community service activities email Community_Service@JacketBackers.org.  

9. Technical – Transitioning from Facebook groups to just the Facebook page. 

10. Travel Chair,  TJ, was looking volunteers to help call.  Planning road game trips.  

11. Janice – Officer at large:  Obtained player signatures on hats and pucks at draft party for use in future Jacket Backers events.   

12. Next meeting August 22nd 6:30 pm, Jason will find a location for us.

Assist with Krumm Park Community Build Playground

Volunteers are needed on Tuesday, July 23rd & Thursday, July 25th (8am - 4:30pm) to assist in the building of the Krumm Park playground at 854 Alton Ave, Columbus, OH 43219.  Tasks include assembly of equipment, mixing & pouring concrete, shoveling wood mulch, first aid, directing parking and assisting with food service & registration.  (Some jobs will require heavy lifting, others will have minimal physical requirements.)

Please contact Julie at president@jacketbackers.org if you would like to help.  (CBJ Staff will be helping also.)  Columbus Recreation & Parks Department hope to provide breakfast and lunch for volunteers, so RSVPs are preferred, but you can also just show up.  If you can't help all day, that's ok too, any time you have available would be welcomed.  Ribbon cutting will be Thursday, July 25th, 3:45 - 4:00pm.  ...Clean-up help after the ribbon-cutting is also needed.
