Community Power Play Raises $82 for the Blue Jackets Foundation During 1st Weekend!

Photo by Jamie Sabau/NHLI via Getty ImageJack Johnson converted on the Blue Jackets' first power play of the season during Friday's home opener against Calgary.  With assists from Marion Gaborik and James Wisniewski, Jack Johnson will also be remembered for scoing the first ever Community Power Play Goal.

The Community Power Play goals continued on Saturday night on Long Island.  Mark Letestu netted the 2nd Community Power Play goal against the Islanders with assists from Cam Atkinson and Brandon Dubinsky.

The two Community Power Play goals mean a $20 donation to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation from the Jacket Backers.  In addition to our donation an additional $62 was collected for the Foundation resulting in $82 raised to date.

We will keep a running tally posted here on the website in the upper right sidebar.

The Jacket Backers with Support from the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Present the Community Power Play

The Jacket Backers are proud to announce the Community Power Play!

For each power play goal scored by the Columbus Blue Jackets this season, the Jacket Backers will donate $10 to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation.

Over the summer we lost our dear friend and dedicated volunteer, David Yatsco.  Shortly after learning of David's passing, thinking about all of the good memories with him, we quickly started wondering what we could do to honor David's life and his great spirit.

Occasionally, when the team hit a rough spot, David would put out a jar on our membership table at home games that asked for "DONATIONS FOR MORE POWER PLAY GOALS".  It was his way of trying to give the team a boost.

Going through some of our stuff this fall, we came across David's jar. It inspired us to come up with the idea of making a donation with every CBJ Power Play Goal.  With the support of the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation the idea of the Community Power Play was born.

With each Power Play goal scored by the Blue Jackets, the Jacket Backers will donate $10 to the Blue Jackets Foundation.  And you can help!  At home games, at all of our events, or online, you can help.  You can help by making a matching donation with us, or any donation you choose, to the Blue Jackets Foundation via the Community Power Play.

We will begin accepting donations at the home opener at our table behind section 116.  When we score a power play goal, stop by our table to make a donation or just to celebrate power play goals with us!  If you are not at the game, we will keep a donation button on our website for your convenience.  All Community Power Play proceeds go to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation.

Who has inspired YOU to donate in our Community Power Play?  Share their names and your stories with us!  Email your inspiration to powerplaystory@jacketbackers.org!

This year, we're donating because of Dave.  And John.  And Andy.  And Jane.  And Rick.  And Ryan.  And many more.

Celebrate Life, Celebrate Hockey, Celebrate the Community Power Play and help the Jacket Backers give a little back to our community!

Sad news to share about former Membership Chair, David Yatsco

CHRIS PARKER/THISWEEKNEWSI have some very sad news to share with all of you today.  A close friend of David Yatsco informed me today that David passed away on Saturday, August 24.

David began serving as the Jacket Backers Membership Chair in 2008 for several seasons and gave the position all he had.  He was an unwavering fan through and through, even when our team had nowhere to go but up.  He was an enthusiastic supporter of the CBJ and volunteered his time at our membership table in arena sharing his love for the Jackets and hockey with everyone who stopped by.

He was well known for his "Welcome Letters" distributed in various means to new and existing club members and for his wry "Donations for a Power Play Goal" charity jar when things weren't looking their best on the ice.  It was with great reluctance that he stepped away from the position due to his ongoing health issues.  But that didn't stop him from trying to help and attending every event he could manage.  His passion for the Columbus Blue Jackets and for the Jacket Backers never wavered.

David was a quiet, unassuming man who always had a positive outlook on life.  He didn't like to draw attention to himself or his illness, but did quietly ask for prayers to help him have the strength to face this fight.  At first he didn't want many to know about his illness so that it wouldn't worry others until it became apparent he couldn't keep it a secret any longer.  At that point, he shared the news and began a quest to live with his disease bravely and remember to live every moment he possibly could to the fullest.  He was optimistic through it all.  He had a brief remission and had been returning to work, then his cancer returned and he began a new chemo treatment.  We hadn't heard from him much in the last two months as the chemo took its toll, but we didn't realize he was again so ill.
I last saw Dave at one of the Sunny 95 Neighborhood Block Parties during this summer where the CBJ had invited the Jacket Backers to share space in their booth and share our love for Jackets hockey.  The sun was out and David was smiling, looking forward to all that this season has to offer.  He'll be with us in spirit all the way to the day when the Columbus Blue Jackets hold the Stanley Cup high.

As David was so fond of signing off at the end of his Jacket Backers Welcome letters -
"Here's to playing hockey in June..."  in memory of David.

Funeral Arrangements are as follows:

Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home - 4303 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, OH 44515 with viewing from 5 - 8 pm on Friday, August 30.

Funeral Saturday, August 31 at St. Michael's Parish, 300 N. Broad St, Canfield, OH at 9:30 am - after mass, moving across street for gathering

The Jacket Backers will be working on a way to honor David's memory.  If you have great photos of Dave you'd like to share in an online remembrance, or would like to make a donation in memory of David, please contact Julie at president@jacketbackers.org.

The tickets are in Section 432 & 433 and each ticket will be encoded with a $15 voucher for food, beer or wine at the Verizon Center.  Your cost per ticket and food voucher is $95.  Due to limited availability these tickets may be purchased by members only (members are permitted to bring family members and/or a guest).  If purchased directly from the Capitals these tickets would cost $88 plus $13.75 in fees per ticket and not include the food voucher.

Purchase your tickets now with our "Buy Now" button below.  Space is limited.

In addition to the tickets, The Jacket Backers have reserved a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn in Silver Spring, Maryland.  The room rate based on double occupancy is $119 ($134.47 with taxes).  Valet parking ($15) is limited in the hotel garage, but free parking is available in the "Town Square Garage" directly behind the hotel lot.  We will provide a discount code for you to use when making your reservation online to receive this rate.  Reservations must be made by 10/3/13 to receive our group rate.  The Hampton Inn is located three blocks from the Red Line Metro stop with easy access to the Verizon Center and other Washington DC attractions.

We apologize to anyone that was hoping for this to be a bus trip.  That would have been our preference as well.  But due to the cost and immediate need to purchase tickets, we felt that trying to make a bus trip work to Washington would have prevented us from providing a variety of other travel opportunities that we will be announcing in the near future.

These tickets are currently sold out.  Only use the Buy Now button below if you have already made arrangements to purchase these tickets!
