Technical Difficulties!

While making some changes to the location of our website we have encountered a few difficulties.

The website is being re-created. Take a stroll through last season as we re-post the content from last year.

We will be posting updates about summer activities as they are planned as well as posting our prior content.

Everything should be back to normal in a week or so.  Thank you for your patience.

UPDATE:  The Structure of the website is complete.  Any feedback in the comments or to webmaster@jacketbackers.org would be greatly appreciated.

Please note that our domain address is back to simply 'jacketbackers.org' not 'thejacketbackers.com/test1'.  Consequently, some old links to our site and RSS feeds are obsolete.

If you use the RSS feed, please update your feed address to http://www.jacketbackers.org/rss.xml - That is our main RSS feed; there are other feeds for subsets of the website.

Join the CAHL in helping Hockey Beat down Breast Cancer!

Teams from the Columbus Adult Hockey League (CAHL), in cooperation with Chiller Ice Rinks, are pleased to announce the first "Hockey Beats down Breast Cancer" game benefitting the Young Survival Coalition.  The game is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 8:00 - 10:00 pm at the Dispatch Ice Haus.

The CAHL has invited JB members to join in and help in their quest to Beat Down Breast Cancer.  The event is open to the public at a suggested (voluntary) $5 donation; you're also welcome to attend the pregame meet and greet at the Garage Bar (147 Vine St.) and post-game gathering at the R Bar (413 N. Front St.)

The original concept was to play one regulation CAHL game wearing pink hockey jerseys sponsored by friends, family and colleagues who had a loved one stricken by breast cancer.

The event has grown since then.  The game has gained support and generated interest from all around the hockey community, including the CBJ.  There are 46 roster spots available for the benefit game and approximately 10 players on the waiting list to play.  The players' jerseys can be sponsored for a minimum donation of $100.  The Jacket Backers have sponsored one of the player jerseys.  There are still five player jerseys available for sponsorship - if you are interested, please email Suzanne at cbjcrazy11@aol.com right away with best phone number to contact you - deadline is Thursday evening 5/7 as jerseys go to press on Friday, 5/8.

Sponsors may choose someone that has been affected by breast cancer whose name will appear on the jersey.  The jersey will be given to the sponsor after the game and the sponsor will also have a chance to meet the player and have a photo taken.  Corporate sponsors are still being sought for the event, as are items for a silent auction to be held during the event.  Various other items will be available for purchase during the event to help support the cause, including t-shirts and wristbands.

"What started out as idle banter between teammates after the purchase of a very colorful pair of hockey gloves has gained serious momentum and the support of three hockey teams and some central Ohio celebrities and athletes," said Thom Wright, assistant captain, D Jets hockey.

"We are honored to be working with Thom and the Chiller Ice Rinks on this inaugural event," said Anna Cluxton, vice president, board of directors for the Young Survival Coalition.  "Being a hockey fan myself, I am thrilled to see the sport I love being used to raise funds for young women and breast cancer."

For more information on the event, contact Thom Wright, 614-805-4949, twright2@netjets.com or PR contact Andrea White, 614-885-7921, awhite@greencrest.com

About the Young Survival Coalition

Young Survival Coalition (YSC) is the premier international organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women and breast cancer.  YSC works with survivors, caregivers and the medical, research, advocacy and legislative communities to increase the quality and quantity of life for women diagnosed with breast cancer ages 40 and under.  The Central Ohio Chapter was initially formed in 2002 by two young survivors who met at the Annual Conference, and officially affiliated with the YSC in 2005.

Check out yscpuckbunnies.com for more on fundraising efforts by two of the local Central Ohio YSC members.

Ohio Hockey Celebration Offers Fans Two Ways to Win Hard-to-Find Playoff Tickets:

Fans attending the Ohio Hockey Celebration this Sunday, April 19th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in the Arena District will get two separate opportunities to win lower bowl tickets to the Blue Jackets up-coming home playoff games. The first opportunity is a raffle for two pairs of tickets—one pair to the Jackets first home playoff game in team history next Tuesday and another pair to next Thursday’s game. Tickets for the raffle will be $5 each and proceeds from the raffle will go to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation. The event will also feature a hardest slap shot contest free with admission. The fan in attendance who has the hardest slap shot as clocked by radar will win two lower bowl tickets to next Thursday’s game at Nationwide Arena.

The Radar Cage is one of five interactive games at the Ohio Hockey Celebration brought in directly from Top Shot Interactive in Toronto, Canada. Other games include: Top Shot Hockey, an electronic full-sized hockey net which provides shooters an opportunity to play a variety of games testing their shooting accuracy; Road Hockey Warrior, a goaltending simulation where the contestant gets foam pucks shot at them and must prevent them from getting in the goal; Shut Out Virtual Goalie, a game in which the player faces off against virtual shooters on a TV monitor; and a Mini Rink complete boards, nets, foam pucks and plastic sticks for children to play hockey.

The event will also feature an exhibit from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada, a game worn jersey expo, a hockey memorabilia auction and an autograph session with former Blue Jackets Geoff Sanderson, Kevyn Adams and Brett Harkins and former Cleveland Baron Dennis Maruk. The FS Ohio Blue Line will be on hand selling team merchandise and game worn Blue Jackets jerseys.

Tickets for the event are available online at Ohio Hockey Celebration’s website (www.ohiohockeycelebration.com) and are $15 for adults and $10 for children. A portion of net proceeds from the event will go to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation.

April Message from Membership Chair David Yatsco

Welcome Jacket Backers,

WE MADE IT!!!  After 9 years and 8 seasons, the Blue Jackets have made it into the playoffs.  There is no time to revel in our accomplishments this season as the second season begins this Thursday.  A couple weeks ago, I made plans to travel to Seattle and attend the first playoff game in either Calgary or Vancouver.  Unfortunately, we finished in seventh place and have to play Detroit in the first round.  Good thing I don't travel to Vegas very often.  I am still going to carry the flag to the west coast and root our boys to victory.  I did see there would be a huge group going to Detroit.  Here's hoping for a repeat performance like the last time we played there.

It has been said if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.  Detroit doesn't get any better.  They are the reigning Stanley Cup Champions.  One thing I do know is, in a short series, you are only as good as your goaltender.  I think we have Detroit beat in that area.  The Detroit defense can be stifling at times but we have held our own against them this year and split the season series 3-3.

The Army of the Ohio is strong and is continuing to grow.  Coach Hitchcock repeatedly makes comments about how our fans affect the play of the team.  Stand Proud and Be LOUD.  The journey is about to begin and you can make a difference.

Here's to playing hockey in June

Help the Jacket Backers fight MS during the Playoffs!

Help the Jacket Backers fight MS during the Playoffs!

s    TThe Jacket Backers have sponsored the MS Walk team “Playoffs Baby” and donated $100.00 towards their efforts this Saturday – Melinda Ward and her brother Christopher have been club members for awhile and Melinda has been looking for people to walk or donate for the cause.  Several of the officers have personally known Christopher for a few years and know of his struggles with multiple sclerosis that he has done his best to quietly keep moving forward with.  As both she and Chris are ardent hockey fans, we thought this support was appropriate and thought we would ask members if they were interested in helping support the cause to donate additional funds directly.

If you would like to read more about the walk, or are interested in joining the fight or making a donation please follow this link or see the whole URL below for an explanation and a photo of Melinda and Christopher.  Thanks for your support to help the Jacket Backers fight MS during the playoffs.

The Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the National MS Society is a collective of individuals who want to do something about MS now. To that end, we are committed to helping over 10,000 Ohioans impacted by MS to continue moving their lives forward. The Chapter raises funds locally to support programs and services for people with MS and their family and friends as well as the National MS Society’s research initiatives. Jacket Backers in the Dispatch

The Jacket Backers made the front page of the Dispatch today.  Thank you to everyone that spoke to Steve Wartenberg to help with the article.  Thank you to Jeff and Anne for being so organized.  Thank you to Andy for being the sleepless Blue Haired Guy.  I guess I will have to deal with being low key.

Also if you missed it, many of the people on the front page last Thursday are members as well even if the paper didn't note they were Jacket Backers.  Linda, in the foreground and caption, is a member along with Nancy, Jessica, Amber and the side of Julie's head.
